Downtown Cabaret Theatre
The Downtown Cabaret Theatre has been a mainstay of downtown Bridgeport's cultural life for more than 25 years. This unique, non-profit theater offers fully produced, award-winning musical productions in a cabaret setting. The audience may bring their own picnic-style meals and refreshments to enjoy during the shows, which are presented on weekends. The Cabaret is also home to a children’s theater company that presents musical adaptations of fairy tales, children’s literary classics and some new works too!
The Downtown Cabaret Theatre evolved out of the highly successful Sacred Heart University Cabaret, and moved to its current setting in 1975 with the encouragement of business and civic leaders who believed that a permanent professional theatre company was essential to the re-development of Bridgeport’s downtown. Since, them more than half a million people have enjoyed new shows, revues and revivals at the Cabaret.
The assembly room of the former YWCA was converted to a theatre, including the addition of a balcony and air conditioning. The facility underwent a $1.3 million renovation in 1995, at which time a fly house was added over the stage, new technical and air conditioning equipment was installed, and the lobby and house were remodeled to accommodate 276 patrons.
