Klein Memorial Auditorium
Although in reality it is outside the downtown Bridgeport “teardrop,” the Klein Memorial Auditorium, located just a few blocks to the East on Fairfield Avenue, is a center of the city’s vibrant cultural life.
Built with a testamentary gift from Jacob B. Klein and Ray R. Klein, and recently renovated, this magnificent performing arts space is owned by the city of Bridgeport.
Luminaries who have appeared at the Klein include Leonard Bernstein, the late composer and conductor of Fairfield and Arthur Fiedler, the late longtime conductor of the Boston Pops, the great operatic baritone Paul Robeson, comedian Milton Berle, and pianist/humorist Victor Borge. The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King and president George W. Bush have both spoken at the Klein.
The Klein’s 2004-2005 season included the comedy ensembles Second City and the Capitol Steps, The Nutcracker by the New England Ballet Company, a production of Shakespeare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona, concerts by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and appearances by comedy greats Sinbad and Bob Newhart.
In addition to its own season, the Klein is also the home of the Greater Bridgeport Symphony, which will present its 60th season under the baton of Maestro Gustav Meier. For more information on the symphony and its performances, please visit http://www.bridgeportsymphony.org/.
